John Barbano, President

Welcome to our web site.  Our divsion is one of 88 that belong to the California Retired Teachers Association (CTRA) . There are  50,000 members  in CRTA of which 700 are in our  Mid-Peninsula  Divsion which is located in Northern Santa Clara County -the Silicon Valley area of the South Bay.

Our core purpose is to protect and enhance the benefits of retired educators by support- ing CRTA in all its endeavors.  One is to improve the  purchasing  power of our pensions.    Over the last 20 years we have been successful in legislative efforts to increase it from 70% to 75% to 80% and to    85% in the   current budget proposal.

When the governor refused to pay the yearly half-billion into the supplementary
benefit program  a few years ago, we joined CalSTRS as a companion in a suit to force the State to repay this debt.  Statewide ,  our members donated $300,000 to a litigation fund. Last year , we won the case with the court requiring  the State  to repay the
half-billion plus over $200,000 in interest.

We are curently deeply involved in supporting affordable universal health care
for all and getting Congress to remove the unfair windfall eliminaion and government offset provisions of social securit that ad-
versely effect many of our retirees.

Though we are politically active we do not
take positions supporting or opposing candidates for office.

At the  State  CRTA level we have a Legis- lative Committee  ably chaired by Ken Hewitt.  They  are assisted by an excellent lobbyist, David Walrath ,  and  grassroots division legislative committees.   Our  committee is chaired by David Struthers.

Also, we are deeply involved in providing assistances to our follow retirees  and volunteering in our community.

To keep members informed each receives a State CRTA Contact megazine   and a newsletter from the division which is also shown on the Web.  You will  find a link at the bottom  left column .

Since we value  staying  informed and socializing, we have a system of general meetings.  The   division meets on the second Monday of October , December and February.  April is set by the  Legislation Committee and June by Scholarship  at Michaels at Shoreline, Mountain View.

The Board meets on the third Monday of September , November , January and March at Mountain View Recreation Center.   May and June meeting is arranged so that it does not conflict with the State CRTA Conven- tion
.

You are welcomed to attend any of our
General and/or Board Meetings and even better  to  become a member of our fine organization.  As a member you can be as
active as you choose.   But having you as a member increases the number of CRTA
members.   The bigger number we have
the more impact we can have protecting
pension benefits.
