John Barbano, President

Welcome to our website. Our division is one of eighty eight-that belong to the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA). There are 50,000 members in CalRTA of which 700 are in our Mid-Peninsula Division, located in northern Santa Clara County, the Silicon Valley area of the South Bay.

Our core purpose is to protect and enhance the benefits of retired educators by supporting CalRTA in all its endeavors. One goal is to improve the purchasing power of our pensions. Over the last 20 years we have been successful in legislative efforts to increase that power from 70% to 75% to 80% and to 85% in the current budget proposal.

When the governor refused to pay the yearly $500,000 into the supplementary benefit program a few years ago, we joined CalSTRS as a companion in a suit to force the State to repay this debt. Statewide, our members donated $300,000 to a litigation fund. Last year we won the case with the court requiring the State to repay the full amount plus over $200,000 in interest.

We are currently deeply involved in supporting affordable health care for all and getting Congress to remove the unfair windfall elimination and government offset provisions of Social Security that adversely.

affect many of our retirees. Though we are politically active, we do not take positions supporting or opposing candidates for office.

At the CalRTA state level we have a Legislative Committee ably chaired by Ken Hewitt. They are assisted by an excellent lobbyist, David Walrath, and by grassroots division committees. Courtney Bryant chairs division 54’s legislative committee.

Also, we are deeply involved in providing assistance to our fellow retirees and volunteering in our communities.

CalRTA endeavors to keep members informed by seeing that each receives the state organization’s Contact magazine and the division’s newsletter, also available on the web. You will find a link at the bottom left column. Since we value staying informed and socializing, we have a system of general meetings. Division 54 meets on the second Monday of October and December. The Legislative committee sets the March meeting and the June meeting is set by the Scholarship committee. All meetings are held at Michaels at Shoreline in Mountain View.

The Board meets on the third Monday of September, November, and February. The May and June meetings are scheduled so as not to conflict with the State Convention. They are held at the Mountain View Recreation Center.

You are welcome to attend any of our general and/or board meetings and are encouraged to become a member of this fine organization. As a member, you can be as active as you choose. By joining, you increase the membership of CalRTA, and the larger our numbers, the more impact we can have with the legislature as we endeavor to protect our pension.
